I have had so many clients over the years tell me that they come
to me because they just can’t seem to make their nails look as
good as I can, and last as long as I can, and I always have told them
that yes, they can. Nail Technicians are not members of a secret society.
We have no secret potion that makes us better than you at doing
what we do. Nail Techs are no more intelligent than “regular folks.”
All we have is desire, experience and knowledge. This knowledge
has been closely held by Nail Techs, mostly because they don’t want
any other Nail Techs to learn their “tricks” and possibly be outdone
and lose their clientele.
Doing a Spa Manicure and Pedicure is not an art, it is a craft. I
promise you do not need any sort of artistic talent to do this. Follow
my steps, give yourself just a little time for practice, and you will
have success. I have included time saving tips, money saving tips,
and beauty tips to help you along the way, no matter what reason you
have decided to take care of your own nails.
I want to let you in on some of these secrets, because I
truly believe that so many of you need to know them. How you take
care of yourself is very revealing to people who meet you, and unkempt
hands often give up secrets that you would like to keep. Some
of you who already go to a Nail Tech are packing one more thing into
your already busy schedule and taking even more time away from
your families that need you at home. Some of you are wasting your
money and risking your health by going to a sweatshop salon that
doesn’t care about you, only that you have cash money. It is not
easy to find a well trained Nail Technician, if you have found one,
and you have the time and the money to spend, stick with them!
Beauty schools are cranking out half-trained manicurists by
the dozens every day and unleashing them on the public, training
them more about how to convince the public that they have years of
experience than about health and beauty. Many others are trained on
how to get you in and out the door as fast as they can, and with as lit-
tle cost to the “salon” as possible. I also want those of you who
cannot seem to fit their nails into their budget, or who stay home
with the kids to finally have great looking hands!
This doesn’t take long to do, and you do not have to do all of
the treatments all of the time. What I need from you is commitment,
patience and willingness to learn. I need you to trust yourself, and to
believe that you are more than capable of doing what your nail technician
has been doing for you. I need you to know that past failures
in this area are due to poor quality products, lack of knowledge and
falling in the traps set by marketing people. I need you to be easy on
yourself, to know that what is frustrating to you today will become
easier tomorrow, and even easier the day after that. You CAN do
this. You CAN perform a great Spa Manicure on yourself. You CAN
have polish that lasts the better part of 2 weeks, that you have done
yourself. You CAN have young looking beautiful hands for the rest
of your life. You now have the information you need to succeed. All
it takes is to DO IT!
You might think about getting with a friend and learning this
together—you can save double the time and money and it is a little
easier to learn some of these techniques on another persons hand
(rather than having to learn how to be ambidextrous along with everything
else). No matter what a good Samaritan he might be, your
husband/boyfriend probably does NOT want to get his nails polished
so you can get some practice! I can bet that he will be most willing
to let you practice your massage techniques on him however! Some
of my most appreciative clients over the years have been men, and if
your man is concerned about his appearance, he will appreciate having
someone in the home that can tend to his hands.
That said, it is not difficult to learn and do this by yourself, but just
keep in mind that you will have to learn some ambidexterity as well.
For a little while, you will always feel like one hand looks better than
the other, but chances are, no one else will notice, and I promise,
with a little practice, you soon will get the hang of using your
“wrong” hand with finesse!
Are you ready? Lets go shopping!

As a nail technician, I take umbrage at your intial paragraph that nail techs do not share their “secrets” in case they are “outdone”. What absolute rot. A good nail tech eagerly shares as he/she wants their client to enjoy good, healthy nails and for fellow techs to ensure that their clientele do too. Not all of us work from lack as you imply.
As for trade secrets, I have yet to read of any on this blog. What I see is just plain (and good) commonsense and you don’t have to be a nail tech to have this.
Cheers,

I’m sorry, that has not been my experience, however it is what I do. You are lucky to have worked with such generous people.
